Oh my! How sweet! Today I heard a terrible crash. A little song sparrow had flown hard against our glass window. I went outside to check on it and found it unconscious on the ground. I was afraid another animal (such as the hawk we've seen lately) would make short work of it, so I picked it up and held it to see if it would awaken. It was unconscious for about 20 minutes, then gradually began to gain awareness. He sat on my hand for about 20 minutes after waking up. He couldn't figure out quite how to coordinate his legs for a while. He watched me closely, then finally took off after about 20 minutes.
Truly special.
I hope your bird recovers too.

Me too. It flew into the garage where I was working on a cabinet. I heard something fluttering against the fluorescent lights on the ceiling but just thought it was a wasp or something. When I finally looked up I saw that it was a hummingbird! I quickly turned off all the lights and opened the door so it could get out, but I guess it was freaked out or in shock because it went to the window and just sat there. So I picked it up and took it outside. But it didn't fly out of my hands. I thought it might be cold or in shock so I closed my hands over it for a few minutes and then opened them again, but it still didn't fly.
I called the bird rescue place but it was closing time for them. The lady told me to put it in a box with a washcloth and put the box on a heating pad, with the box half on and half off the pad so the bird could get away from the heat if it wanted. I also put a shallow hummingbird feeder in there. After 30 minutes or so, we heard it fluttering, took the box outside, and opened it. The bird still didn't fly, so dh picked it up and placed it on his finger. The bird sat there a few seconds and then flew off!
I don't know why it flew into the garage unless it was brighter in there than outside today. I did have all the lights on in there and it was gray and cloudy outside.
I haven't seen one that close before either, but sometimes they do come up to us when we are on the deck and hover in front of us for a few seconds while they look over us.

ReplyDeleteOh it did! As soon as dh picked it up from the box and let it sit on his finger, it flew off and went to the nearest tree.

Wow, that was truly a special experience. I am glad the little bird recovered.
DeleteSounds like yours had a concussion or something. I was afraid my cat would get this one if I didn't keep it safe until it recovered.
DeletePoor little bird. I am glad you were there to rescue it.
